About Megawatt Index

Megawatt Index publishes trackers, calculators and datasets about the physical and financial footprint of AI data centers: the electricity they use, the water they consume, the utility rules and legislation that decide who pays for new grid capacity, and the jobs they create.

Who publishes it

The site is published by the Megawatt Index Editorial Team, not a named individual. Because no single person vouches for a page, every row shows its source and the date it was checked, every estimate shows its method, and our standards are written down in the editorial policy and the methodology.

How the datasets are built

We compile each dataset from official and public sources: federal agencies such as the Energy Information Administration and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, state utility commissions and legislatures, county and city governments, and operators' own published reports. We use AI research tools to find and read those sources; every row links to the official page it was checked against, and the check date is stored with the row. We do not copy other trackers' datasets.

What we do not do

  • We do not publish opinion or news commentary. Summaries describe what a bill, tariff or ordinance does.
  • We do not estimate figures for a specific facility. Calculators give ranges for a hypothetical site and show their assumptions.
  • We do not run a job board, sell leads or take payment to include or exclude anything.

How the site is funded

The site carries no advertising, sponsorships or affiliate links. It is funded by its owner.

Corrections and contact

If a row is wrong or out of date, email corrections@megawattindex.com with the page and the official source that shows the right figure. See corrections for how we handle reports.
